On August 1, our Laboratory Director, Sophie Bergeron, had the pleasure of presenting at the International Association of Relationship Research conference, at a symposium entitled: Interpersonal Trauma as a Disruptor of Sexuality and Intimacy: Findings from Community and Clinical Samples.
Dr. Bergeron presented the results of a study entitled Couples’ Childhood Maltreatment Profiles and Trajectories of Sexual Health Over One Year. This research aimed to better understand how couples’ childhood maltreatment profiles relate to their sexual health over a one-year period.
Data from 885 couples who completed measures on childhood maltreatment, sexual satisfaction, distress and function were used, and 5 couple profiles were identified. The results revealed that couples with little experience of childhood maltreatment had better sexual health over time, while those where one partner had experienced sexual neglect or abuse saw their sexual satisfaction and function decrease, and their sexual distress increase. This study highlights the important role that early experiences can play in the trajectory of sexual intimacy in adulthood.
Congratulations Sophie for this interesting presentation!
