New findings from the PRESAJ Study, conducted among more than 3,000 Quebec adolescents, reveal that the development of “subjective sexuality”—that is, the ability to recognize one’s desires, assert them, and reflect on one’s intimate life—fosters a more conscious and confident exploration of one’s sexuality.
Conducted as part of Marie-Michèle Paquette’s doctoral thesis, this research shows, in particular, that adolescents who feel more comfortable with their sexual identity are more inclined to explore different relational and sexual experiences. The findings also highlight the importance of focusing on self-assertion and communication in sexuality education.
