The laboratory is pleased to announce the publication of a new article on self-compassion and sexual distress in couples coping with sexual interest/arousal disorder (SIAD). The article, published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, is the result of a doctoral essay by our student Maude Massé-Pfister (D.Psy candidate) and uses data from our Sexpand study.
Entitled “Cross-sectional and prospective associations between self-compassion and sexual distress in couples coping with sexual interest/arousal disorder”, this article aimed to explore the role of self-compassion in sexual distress in couples coping with SIAD, taking into account overall relationship satisfaction as well as sexual orientation and gender identity.
This study shows that, in couples with SIAD, greater self-compassion in partners is associated with lower sexual distress in both partners. Self-compassion may be particularly beneficial for partners of people with SIAD in sexually diverse couples.
Congratulations to Maude and her collaborators for publishing this article! To read the nuances of the findings, as well as the clinical implications, the full article is available here: https://doi.org/10.1093/jsxmed/qdaf007
