An article published in UdeMNouvelles on July 10 reports the results of a collaborative study involving Dr. Sophie Bergeron, our laboratory director, Dr. Natalie Rosen (Dalhousie University) and Dr. Katrina Bouchard (University of British Columbia).
The study discussed in the article aimed to test the feasibility of a cognitive-behavioral therapy in couples in which the woman is struggling with sexual interest/arousal disorder. The results of this study show a significant improvement in sexual desire and reduction of sexual distress in women with the diagnosis, and a mild to moderate reduction of sexual distress in partners.
In the interview with UdeMNouvelles, Dr. Bergeron mentions the importance of conceptualizing this issue as a couple’s problem. She also points out that the proposed therapy encourages couples to discuss their sexuality openly, and includes components aimed not only at developing intimacy, but also at deconstructing the myths surrounding sexuality and this diagnosis. The next step will be to test the efficacy of this couples’ intervention in a randomized clinical trial starting in January 2025.
